The four Republican nominees, two for Precinct 2 Commissioner and two for Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace, discussed their qualifications for the position and touched on topics including county infrastructure, communications and collaboration with other branches of government.

The commissioner candidates were questioned about the state of the departmental roads and the equipment used to repair them. Incumbent Candice Bullock said while there may not be an overnight resolution, the Commissioners’ Court has taken action by investing in equipment and employees to rectify the issues.

Commissioner candidates were also asked how they plan to work with the town of Brenham and government agencies like TxDOT. Challenger Mark Schonefeld said communicating with voters is the county’s greatest asset.

In the race for justice of the peace, Daniel McCarthy said he felt his experience and background made him the most balanced candidate.

One question that came up concerned McCarthy’s campaign slogan, “Make Crime Illegal Again,” asking whether he felt current Washington County judges weren’t doing enough to deter crime. McCarthy defended his statement, saying someone was needed to defend against sprawl in Washington County. However, Duane “Dane” Houston said the statement gives the impression that local law enforcement and courts are not doing their job.

Early voting begins Monday, February 14and. Election day is March 1st. The winners of the two races will not have a Democratic opponent in November.
