WA to modernize ship manufacturing and maintenance docks

The WA Government has announced a $32.1 million investment program to upgrade Defense Navy manufacturing and maintenance facilities at its Australian Marine Complex at Henderson south of Perth (pictured).

The program builds on previous announcements, bringing the total invested in Henderson to more than $89.3 million in four infrastructure projects.

A new ship transfer lane at AMC was recently substantially completed and earthworks are underway for a new shipbuilding hall and two road intersections.

As part of the latest announcement, the existing AMC 1 platform will be extended by approximately 153 meters and existing services at AMC 1, 2 and 3 platforms will be improved.

The upgrades will create additional berthing capacity for Royal Australian Navy ships, including Anzac-class frigates, offshore patrol vessels and future Hunter-class frigates.

The project also includes the design of a 200-meter Finger Wharf to create Piers 7 and 8, which would increase AMC’s ability to support larger Navy vessels.

Ertech, a Washington-based civil and electrical construction company, has won the contract to design and deliver the major wharf upgrade, which will be completed by September.

Premier Mark McGowan: “Our investment in a major AMC wharf upgrade is an example of our commitment to developing the defense capabilities we need to diversify Western Australia’s economy and create jobs.

“The delivery of these projects will strengthen our argument that Western Australia should be the country’s primary site for maintaining frigates.”

The AMC represents a major infrastructure asset for the national defense sector, contributing significantly to maritime innovation and Australia’s sovereign shipbuilding capability.

The complex is used by over 150 local small and medium enterprises and provides an important training network for AO workers.
