RE reporting on the transfer of ownership of Peat Island (CCN328); isn’t this the land of Peat Island Guringai?
I researched the Darkinjung and they would rarely have come as far south as Peat Isle.
It was not until European colonization introduced smallpox, influenza and the common cold that wiped out the Guaringai population north of the Hawkesbury River over 230 years ago that the Darkinjung came south to Wyong and further north and east of the Great Dividing Range, Sugar Loaf, etc.
The lands of the south central coast, Broken Bay, the Hawkesbury River, and the northern beaches and suburbs were traditionally occupied by the Guringai, with the Darkinjung being allowed entry only for the purposes of hunting and gathering.
I believe that Peat Island would be a great asset to all if incorporated into the national park system.
Used only for foot traffic and partially revegetated with local bird habitat plants and eucalyptus trees.
Also, have picnic facilities, electric barbecues and a kayak, canoe, boat area where people can disembark to enjoy the island.
