FARGO — The Forum is one of four newsrooms nationwide that have been named recipients of the News Media Alliance’s 2021 John P. Murray Award for Excellence in Audience Development.
The award recognizes newsrooms for their innovative and successful approaches to audience engagement.
In addition to The Forum, which was honored in the small newsroom category, other newsrooms recognized were Detroit Free Press and Honolulu Star-Advertiser in the medium category, and Newsday, in Long Island, New York, in the big category.
A selection committee comprised of staff from the alliance and the American Press Institute selected the four winners, tied in the medium category, for their outstanding innovation and sophistication in understanding content strategy in the audience development framework.
The four news publishers effectively used multiple platforms and formats to share content, and they developed thoughtful and responsive content and programs to help readers navigate important issues, such as COVID-19 vaccines and crime. local, according to the News Media Alliance. .
The alliance is a nonprofit organization representing more than 2,000 news organizations and their cross-platform activities in the United States and around the world. Alliance members include print, digital and mobile publishers of original news content.

Michael Bolden, Executive Director and CEO of the American Press Institute, said the four John P. Murray Award recipients demonstrated the transformational thinking news organizations must put into practice in the digital age to better serve their communities. .

The John P. Murray Award for Excellence in Audience Development was established in memory of former Vice President of Audience Development, John Murray, who was with the alliance for more than 20 years before die in 2018.
Murray was known in the news industry for helping alliance member news publishers improve audience development and engagement and for helping members share best practices.
