Shepparton adds voice to Victoria 2026 forum

Last week’s Victoria 2026 State Government Partnership Forum – held in view of the delivery of the Commonwealth Games to regional centers in four years’ time – included representatives from the Greater Shepparton area.
Among the more than 150 partners – including members of regional councils, regional tourist offices, trade and business groups from the four regional hubs, the regional higher education sector, tourism associations, traditional owners and the sports and recreation sector – was Greater Shepparton City Council. General Manager Peter Harriott and Mayor Shane Sali.
On the program, a debrief on the lessons of Birmingham 2022 and how they could be applied to Victoria 2026.
“Greater Shepparton City Council is proud to have played a leading role in the development of the regional Commonwealth Games model,” said Mr Harriott.
“The region was represented at last week’s Commonwealth Games Partnership Forum at the MCG, where we heard about important lessons from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, from the involvement of First Nations communities in the design, management and legacy of the Games and regional future planning for all of Victoria to maximize and capitalize on this exciting opportunity in 2026.”
And while Greater Shepparton has yet to be officially announced as a host of sporting or cultural events, regional representatives were ready to hear how they would be more involved in the Heritage Regional Games.
“As the Prime Minister noted when announcing earlier in the year that the Victoria region will host the 2026 Games, we look forward to further announcements on how Shepparton will be involved in the organization. sporting and cultural events and we will continue to work closely with Jacinta. Allan, Commonwealth Games Delivery Minister on how Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley can showcase our incredible region to the world,” said Cr Sali.
Further, Echuca has been boosted by a bid from the International Shooting Sport Federation to include shooting events at Victoria 2026.
As reported by river heraldEchuca was identified as the perfect host for clay target shooting amongst a wider shooting program in Bendigo – and the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Games Federation were to decide what additional sports to add to the program of by October 2022.
