The Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) has started a cold storage project with the aim of providing a sustainable income for female vegetable sellers by controlling distress selling and reducing waste. The project planned to provide about 700 street vendors selling vegetables and fruits, mostly women, with solar-powered cold rooms to reduce waste and electric vehicles for distribution.
Vegetables are perishable commodities and local vendors and farmers are selling around 30% of their unsold stock at ridiculous prices, fearing damage. Secure storage would avoid wastage and eventually improve their income,
It is worth mentioning that the 8th World Forum of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, organized by the city of Rio de Janeiro, aims to deepen the themes of sustainable development, placing food systems at the center of its agenda.
“Cities and governments are essential to promote job creation and income generation through sustainable and inclusive food systems, while respecting the environment and workers’ rights, supporting local products, healthy diets healthier and more affordable and reducing food waste,” added the MUFPP.
