My 13-year-old granddaughter recently texted me about Rep. Matt Gaetz’s comments suggesting diabetics should lose weight before Congress enacts legislation to impose limits on the cost of insulin. It was an attempt to justify his ‘no’ vote last week on the Affordable Insulin Act by implying that diabetics are responsible for their own disease.
It’s disgusting, and Gaetz should be ashamed, along with the 193 House Republicans who voted against it.
My granddaughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 8 years old. She and her father both inherited this dreaded disease and depend on insulin for their daily survival. The cost of their treatment has skyrocketed in recent years and put a strain on their family’s budget.
Blaming and shaming the victims of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease?
Gaetz’s comments and the refusal of the majority of House Republicans to address health care costs in this country are inexcusable. When will the citizens of the United States vote to eliminate these objectionable characters?

Priorities
The US House of Representatives just passed a bill to make insulin affordable for people who need it to survive, but 193 Republicans voted against it.

I thought that was what they wanted.
Speaking at a Trump rally last weekend, Republican Representative Lisa McClain falsely claimed that Osama bin Laden had been arrested by the Trump administration. She also claimed unemployment is at a “40-year high” when it’s actually near an all-time low.
The author of the March 5 letter “Reality Sets In” is right: Republicans will most likely take control of the Senate later this year. But despite his joy at the victory, he at least had the courtesy not to pretend it would be good for the country. This will not be the case. Lies will proliferate and cruelty and ignorance will once again be prevalent.
President Biden and Democrats have worked to protect Americans from COVID, to support marginalized people who experience discrimination, and to put us at the forefront of the world in technology and clean energy.
All Republicans want is cheap gas.
It’s going to be a tough time in America. I hope that won’t happen, but I’m preparing for it now.
Shared Resources
I applaud the letter on educational equity issues in our community (“Equal Resources,” April 2). As the author rightly points out, there is a significant disparity in the resources available to public schools. Students in affluent areas often benefit from fundraising efforts, allowing some schools to provide improved resources, while schools in economically disadvantaged areas do without updated materials and equal resources.
One solution would be for all fundraising efforts to be put together in one pot and split equally between our schools. This would allow our community to support all students regardless of the economic situation.
Since the North Carolina Legislature is unwilling to allocate sufficient funds to ensure that all schools have all the assets they need to succeed, we need to start taking local action.

If you know anyone who has diabetes, they should know that 92% of House Republicans just voted against a standalone bill that would simply cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month.
Lord forbids the workers and the sick to take a break. We have billionaires who still pay taxes!
Hey, I can’t wait for the Republicans to take over and make all the rules.
