In 2021, Governor Abbott and Texas lawmakers explicitly banned Project 1619 from being taught in K-12 public schools.
“Whether you like the book or not, the state book ban is un-American, and everyone should oppose it,” said Randall Morton, founder of the Progressive Forum. “I am thrilled to take a stand with our partners at the ACLU of Texas who are leading the way in protecting civil rights and racial justice.”
Oni Blair, Executive Director of the ACLU of Texas, said, “The censorship of the 1619 Project and other books about the experiences of black people, people of color, Jews and queers erases our histories, our cultures and our identities. We are an integral part of the past, present and future of Texas and the United States. As a black woman, parent of public school students, and executive director of the ACLU of Texas, I am proud to join the Progressive Forum in welcoming Nikole Hannah-Jones as she shares her groundbreaking work in the project 1619 and reminds us of the importance of our First Amendment rights.
The program will feature Nikole Hannah-Jones co-interviewed by Randall Morton and Oni Blair. Hannah-Jones will sign books at the end of the evening.

The 1619 Project grew out of a special edition of The New York Times Magazine marking the 400th anniversary of the arrival of a ship in the British colony of Virginia in August 1619 carrying a cargo of 20 to 30 slaves from Africa. The 1619 Project reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. The 1619 Project is an ongoing initiative, now in a book that weaves together 19 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in America today, along with 36 poems and works of fiction, showing how the legacy of 1619 reaches every part of contemporary America. society, from politics, music, food, traffic and citizenship, to capitalism, religion and our democracy itself. It reveals long-hidden truths around the founding of our nation – and how this legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation but continues to shape modern American life.
