Kentuckians who watched Democratic Rep. Jamie raskin from Maryland are handling the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump last February and now see him on the committee investigating the Jan.6 assault on Capitol Hill may not realize he served in that role in extremely difficult personal circumstances.

Raskin, who buried his adult son just a day before he was present in the assault on the United States Capitol in 2021, will be among the first Kentucky Authors Forum from 2022 alongside Dr Fiona Hill and in conversation with the Democratic representative. Jean Yarmut.

the nationally renowned literary event, which returns in person on Monday, January 24, pairs the authors with an interviewer for a frank hour-long conversation in front of a live audience at the Bomhard Theater in Kentucky Performing Arts, 501 W. Main St.

Since 1996, Mary moss greenebaum produced the world-class Kentucky Author Forum.

“It’s like listening to a conversation we never expect to hear,” Greenebaum told the Courier Journal. “In this case, I thought the cross-experiences of Congressman Raskin, Dr. Hill, and Congressman Yarmuth was a dialogue that needed to take place.”

Raskin, who represents the 8th Congressional District of Maryland in the United States House of Representatives, is the author of “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth and Trials of American Democracy”.

In his memoir, Raskin writes about the events of January 6, 2021, just a day after the funeral of his son, Thomas Bloom Raskin. That day, Raskin and his colleagues were trapped in the Capitol where they had gathered to witness the certification of Joe Biden’s election as President.

Shortly after the insurgency failed, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) picked Raskin to be the primary person responsible for Trump’s second impeachment trial. Raskin is now a member of Special Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.

Raskin and Yarmuth will be joined on January 24 by Hill, the author of “There is nothing for you: finding opportunities in the 21st century. ” Hill is a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program of The Brooking Institution and was the primary impeachment witness on charges of presidential misconduct in the U.S. House of Representatives Trump-Ukraine impeachment inquiry.

The daughter of a coal miner, Hill grew up in the north of England. With the mines closing, Hill’s father encouraged her to leave her declining hometown to find a better life elsewhere. The title of her book, “There’s Nothing For You,” comes from her father’s advice to move away.

Hill then studied in Moscow and Harvard. She became an American citizen, senior director of European and Russian affairs at the United States National Security Council and served under three US presidents.

Her memoir is a deeply personal tale in which she shares what she has learned throughout her career and why she believes that expanding opportunities is the only long-term hope for our democracy.

“We are very happy with this mix of experts that we have for the first Authors’ Forum in 2022,” said Greenebaum. “It feels like we’ve been gone a very long time because of the pandemic and it’s a great way to kickstart our events in person.”

In a typical year, the Authors’ Forum at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, will host four or five conferences. Pairs of previous authors and interviews included: Yo-Yo Ma and Teddy Abrams, Nicole Krauss and Elizabeth Blair, Richard Haass and Francis Fukuyama, Matthew Barzun and Amy Edmondson and more.
