The three Republican candidates in the March primary took to the podium to answer questions from the public about representation on Blinn’s board of directors, the voting record and what they think is the biggest challenge for this district.

Incumbent Kyle Kacal said managing future growth in the region and continuing work on bail reform are among his top priorities.

Several questions were put to Kacal, including his vote in the 84and Legislature in favor of the 1903 House Bill, which would have required Blinn College to allocate funds to each campus based on student contact hours. Challenger Ben Bius said if the bill passed, he would have stripped Blinn of Washington County’s representation.

The subject of Kacal’s voting record was also discussed, with challengers saying he did not match the votes of other conservative lawmakers. Challenger Joshua Hamm criticized Kacal’s statement that last year saw the “most conservative session of the Texas Legislative Assembly”.

Early voting begins Monday, February 14and. Election day is March 1st. The winner of the March primary will be unopposed in November.
