First national human rights forum kicks off in September
DOHA: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) announced on Sunday that it will hold the first National Human Rights Forum from September 12-13, 2022.
The forum will focus on the role of law enforcement in protecting human rights during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, with the participation of relevant authorities including the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Sports and Youth and the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre.
The NHRC said the forum intended to promote awareness of the importance of the human rights approach in the work of law enforcement as part of the national performance undertaken to provide elements for the success of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, thus ensuring a safe and secure tournament.
NHRC President, H.E. Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah underlined that the forum was of utmost importance as it was part of the preparations for hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which, according to her, is a historic event and represents the first World Cup to be held. in the Arab region and the Middle East, noting the synergistic efforts of the entire spectrum of society, whether individuals, groups or institutions, to achieve an innovative and distinctive experience that demonstrates crucially the soft power of the State of Qatar in sports and rebirth, including providing the necessary infrastructure assets to stage this world football tournament, emphasizing that the forum has inherent positive indications which obviously reflect the will of the NHRC to ensure respect for human rights and to observe their national and international standards in the context of the preparations and arrangements that have been made for the World Cup,
Furthermore, it aims to develop the platform for national dialogue with all relevant authorities in Qatar, including law enforcement, to work together for the success of the tournament by pursuing a human rights approach. rights, which takes place within the framework of effective action and fruitful partnership between the CNDH and the Department of Human Rights of the Ministry of the Interior, and in the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two games in 2017, as well as the confidentiality of the role played by law enforcement personnel (police) in ensuring the security requirements of this tournament throughout the duration of the Worlds, and the sensitivity of their responsibility in the exercise of this mission based on the principle of legitimacy and the values of human rights, these security personnel constituting the first line facing the supporters of the World Cup having the requirement of legal, behavioral and professional skills associated with moral and ethical aptitude, as well as social and cultural intelligence at the highest level.
She affirmed that the forum will essentially sensitize the Qatari community in general, and those working in law enforcement in particular, on the importance of the right to sport as one of the main pillars of human rights. man, including his role in promoting dignity, the values of tolerance and international solidarity. Similarly, the NHRC clarified in its statement that the two-day forum will discuss the objective and humane imperatives that place sport in the human rights system as a creative human activity and will further explore the extent to which the right to sport contributes to the promotion of human rights.
The forum will further discuss the basic features of preventive outreach efforts within this framework that can be carried out by relevant security agencies, media institutions and Qatari intellectual elites among opinion leaders.
