Economic experts Furman and Dudley to speak at upcoming Panetta Forum – Monterey Herald

MONTEREY — The third Forum in the Leon Panetta Lecture Series will feature guest speakers Jason Furman and William Dudley as the 25th season continues via a live webinar Monday at 6 p.m.

This year’s series, “The 2022 midterm elections and the future of our democracy”, asks in its third event “Who will deal with the challenges of the economy – inflation, inequality and debt? ?”

Former US Secretary of Defense and current President of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, Leon Panetta, will moderate the discussion and hear from economic experts Furman and Dudley.

“Inflation is at its highest for 40 years. This should have a significant impact on the results of the 2022 midterm elections,” Panetta said in a press release. “But as the President, Federal Reserve, and Congress attempt to keep prices low and stabilize the economy, we also face the economic consequences of war in Ukraine and the continuing demands of the COVID pandemic.

“Can we prevent the economy from falling into recession? How can we finance major priority spending without jeopardizing the financial health of our country with an uncontrolled national debt? Are there realistic monetary or political solutions that can secure our economic future? I will put these and other serious questions to our two economic experts.

Furman is the Aetna Professor of Conjunct Economic Policy Practice at Harvard University. He is also a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He served as one of President Obama’s top economic advisers, including serving as the 28th Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2013 to 2017, serving as both President Obama’s Chief Economist and Cabinet Member. Furman also worked on the Council of Economic Advisers and the National Economic Council during the Clinton administration and at the World Bank. He has conducted research in a wide range of areas, such as fiscal policy, tax policy, health economics, social security, and national and international macroeconomics. He is a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal and a frequent commentator on Bloomberg and CNBC. In addition to articles in journals and periodicals, Furman is the editor of two books on economic policy. He holds a doctorate. in Economics from Harvard.

Dudley served as the 10th president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and vice chairman and permanent member of the Federal Open Market Committee, the group responsible for determining the country’s monetary policy, from 2009 to 2018. The group of Markets oversees domestic open market and foreign exchange operations and the provision of account services to foreign central banks and serves as the Fed’s primary eyes and ears in financial markets. Before joining the Bank in 2007, Dudley was a partner and managing director at Goldman, Sachs & Co. and served as the company’s chief US economist for a decade. Before joining Goldman Sachs in 1986, he was Vice Chairman of the former Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. He was also an economist with the Federal Reserve Board from 1981 to 1983. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982.
